Coping with staying fit in confined spaces
Being home is no excuse to stop (or not to start) your regular fitness routine.
A small space, and your body, is all you need.
Water bottles, broomsticks and chairs can help. A yoga mat, resistance bands, a skipping rope and a couple of dumbbells would be nice, but not required. A home gym with a treadmill, stationary bike, elliptical or weight set would be fantastic, but again, not required.
Working out if hard for many (and certainly for me) in the best of times. Even more without a trainer or workout partner. Fortunately, you can still have both at home with a few tech tweaks.
Find a Trainer
Jym, Sparton, Express Fitness, Fit Farm and many other local gyms and personal trainers like Steve Ming and Kamila McDonald already offer digital options to the traditional analogue workout. If you already had a gym membership, your best bet is to call your gym or trainer to find out your options.
Expect many to offer live-streamed, interactive, online classes that you can participate in from the confines of your home.
Your workout partner can train alongside you in the online class. If you decide to skip the session, don’t leave your partner hanging. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or even Skype video conferencing to workout together.
Find an App
If you can’t synchronize your times, you can still challenge each other with a fitness app.
There is certainly a fitness app specifically designed for you and your personal needs.
Do research, ask friends, go for the free trial and find the one that is right for you.
I found five! My personal favourites include:
Runtastic works both indoors and outdoors. So, if you can safely go for an early morning run, do it. Getting out and getting fresh air is essential.
There are many excellent apps, so find one that is right for you!
Find a Video
Ok. If you think apps are too much trouble, look no further than YouTube. There are lots of great workout videos on the platform. Pick one that appeals to you and do it on your own time. It can’t get any easier than that.
As with apps, there are too many to rate, but my favourites include:
Find an accountability partner, whether it is an app or a person or both. Set a challenging goal. Create and follow a suitable scheduled and stay fit … indoors.
